Your laptop is probably the most expensive thing you carry on the way to work, and the bag it lives in does a lot of quiet work: it takes the bumps on the bus, the drizzle on the walk from the station and the weight of everything else you throw in alongside it. So which is best for a commute: a backpack, a tote or a sleeve?
There's no single right answer. It depends on how far you travel, how much you carry and how you like to get around. Here's a practical way to choose, with the real measurements from our product pages so you can check what will fit.
Start with three questions
- How do you get to work? Walking or cycling for a good stretch usually favours a backpack. A short hop on the train or a drive often suits a tote.
- What size is your laptop? Laptop sizes describe the screen, measured diagonally, not the outside of the machine. Check your model's actual dimensions against the bag before you buy.
- What else comes with you? Lunch, a water bottle, an umbrella, gym kit? The more you carry, the more pockets and structure matter.
The backpack: best for longer, busier commutes
If your journey involves a decent walk, stairs, a bike or a crowded platform, a backpack keeps your hands free and spreads the load across two straps. It's also the option with the most built-in organisation.
Our Hackney Backpacks come in a few sizes:
- Medium Hackney Backpack: 33 (+12cm roll top) x 25.5 x 12.5cm, with a capacity of 10 litres, or 14 litres with the roll top extended. It has a padded laptop pocket that fits most 13" models, an anti-theft pocket between the back padding and main compartment, two side slip pockets for a water bottle and umbrella, and a magnetic roll top. It's made from 17 recycled plastic bottles, with a water-resistant fabric that has no PFA coatings.
- Large Hackney Backpack: 38 x 30 x 14cm, with a capacity of 19.7 litres, or 23 litres with the roll top extended. The padded laptop pocket fits most 13" and 16" models, so it's the one to look at if you carry a bigger machine or a full day's kit. It's made from 21 recycled plastic bottles.
Good for: cyclists, walkers, anyone carrying lunch and a bottle as well as a laptop, and people who want somewhere secure for a phone and cards.
Worth knowing: a backpack is the bulkiest of the three, so if you just need to move a laptop from desk to meeting room, it can feel like more bag than you need.
The tote: best for short, relaxed journeys
A tote is easy to grab, easy to get things out of and looks at home in an office, a café or a client meeting. It suits shorter commutes and days when you're not carrying much beyond the essentials.
Our Recycled Tote measures 40 x 41 x 10cm, with a wide 10cm base that fits a 16" laptop. It has a 27cm handle drop, long straps that stay on your shoulder, an inner pocket with a button closure, and rainproof fabric made from 10 recycled plastic bottles.
Good for: train and car commuters, hybrid workers carrying a laptop a couple of days a week, and anyone who also wants a bag that works for the weekend shop.
Worth knowing: a tote has no built-in laptop padding, and all the weight sits on one shoulder. If you use a tote for your laptop, pairing it with a sleeve is the simple fix (more on that below).
The sleeve: best for protection, and for pairing
A laptop sleeve isn't really a commuting bag on its own. It's a padded layer that protects your laptop inside whatever bag you already own, and it's handy for carrying a laptop between meetings or rooms.
Our sleeves have thick quilted padding, a fold-over design with secure metal buttons, and are made from 7.5 recycled plastic bottles:
- 13" Laptop Sleeve: 33 x 25 x 2cm, fits most 13" laptops.
- 16" Laptop Sleeve: 37 x 28 x 2cm, fits most 16" laptops.
Good for: adding padding to a tote, a work bag or a weekend bag, and keeping your laptop scratch-free when it's sharing space with keys, chargers and a lunchbox.
Worth knowing: the sleeves are hand wash only, unlike our bags and backpacks.
Our honest pick, by commute
- Walk or cycle 15 minutes or more: a Medium Hackney Backpack for a 13" laptop, or the Large if you carry a 16" laptop or lots of extras.
- Short train or bus ride, light load: a Recycled Tote with a sleeve inside.
- Drive to work, or a hybrid week: a tote and sleeve works well, and the tote doubles as a shopping bag on your days at home.
- You already own a bag you love: just add a sleeve. The most sustainable bag is usually the one you already have.
A quick fit check before you buy
- Look up your laptop's outside dimensions (length, width and depth), not just the screen size.
- Compare them with the bag or sleeve measurements above, leaving a little room for a case.
- If you're between sizes, or unsure, email us and we'll help you check.
Make it last
Whichever you choose, a little care goes a long way. Our bags and backpacks can be machine-washed at 30°C on a delicate setting (600-800 rpm spin), and shouldn't be tumble dried.
