Eco-Friendly Commute Essentials: A Workday Checklist

The workday commute is where good intentions quietly fall apart. You meant to bring lunch, but it's 7:52 and the train leaves at 8:04. You meant to skip the coffee cup, but the reusable one is still in the sink. By Friday there's a small pile of paper bags, plastic forks and meal-deal wrappers to show for it.

The fix isn't willpower. It's a kit: a short list of things that live by the door, get packed the same way every morning, and make the low-waste option the easy option. Here's our practical, no-guilt checklist for building one.

1. One bag that carries the whole day

Start with the bag, because everything else has to fit in it. If you're juggling a laptop bag, a lunch bag and a carrier for the shop on the way home, something gets left behind. Pick one main bag that suits your journey:

  • If you walk, cycle or ride busy trains: a backpack keeps your hands free and your weight even. The Medium Hackney Backpack is made from 17 recycled plastic bottles and has a padded pocket that fits most 13" laptops, an anti-theft pocket, side slip pockets and a magnetic roll top that takes it from 10 litres to 14 litres when you need extra room.
  • If you drive or have a short hop: a tote is quicker to grab and dig through. Our Recycled Tote is 40 x 41 x 10cm with a wide base, a 27cm handle drop and room for a 16" laptop.

Whichever you choose, the test is simple: can it hold your laptop, lunch and a water bottle without a fight? If yes, it's your commute bag.

2. A laptop sleeve, if your bag doesn't have padding

Totes are roomy but not padded, and laptops don't love being knocked about between a lunch box and a set of keys. A sleeve adds protection without adding another bag. Our 13 Inch Laptop Sleeve measures 33 x 25 x 2cm, has thick quilted padding and secure metal buttons, and there's a 16 inch version too. One note: sleeves are hand wash only, so give them a gentle sponge-down rather than a trip through the machine.

3. A lunch bag you actually want to carry

Bringing lunch from home is one of the easiest ways to cut daily packaging, and it's kinder on your budget too. The trick is making it effortless to pack and carry.

Our Lunch Bags measure 22 x 14 x 33cm (24cm when rolled down), with a magnetic roll top, a pocket for cutlery, one for snacks and two slip pockets inside. They're BPA-free and made from 7 recycled plastic bottles. A lunch bag that has a proper place for your fork means you're less likely to grab a plastic one at the till.

4. The small reusables that do the heavy lifting

These are the bits that stop the daily trickle of single-use items. None of them are complicated, but they only work if they're already in the bag:

  • A refillable water bottle. Fill it the night before and leave it by your keys.
  • A reusable cup. If you buy coffee on the way in, keep one in your bag permanently, not on your desk.
  • Cutlery. A fork and spoon from your kitchen drawer works perfectly. Wrap them in a napkin and tuck them into the cutlery pocket.
  • A cloth napkin or small tea towel. Doubles as a placemat at your desk.
  • A folding shopping bag. For the after-work shop you didn't plan.

5. A backup bag for the shop on the way home

The after-work supermarket dash is where a lot of single-use bags sneak in. A compact reusable bag that stays in your work bag solves it. Our Mini Reusable Bag comes with its own small pouch, carries up to 10kg and is made from 4 recycled plastic bottles. If your weekly shop happens on the commute, the Medium Reusable Bag is 39 x 64 x 17cm, carries up to 20kg and fits the contents of two or three grocery bags.

6. A five-minute evening reset

The kit only works if it's ready to go in the morning. Build a tiny routine the night before:

  1. Empty your lunch bag and wipe out any crumbs or spills.
  2. Wash your cup, bottle and cutlery and put them straight back in your bag once dry.
  3. Check your folding shopping bag is still in there (it has a habit of wandering off).
  4. Pack tomorrow's lunch, or at least decide what it is.
  5. Hang your bag by the door.

Five minutes in the evening saves you from the 7:52 scramble.

7. Look after your kit so it lasts

The most sustainable bag is the one you keep using for years, so a little care goes a long way. Our bags, totes, backpacks and lunch bags can be machine-washed at 30°C on a delicate setting with a 600-800 rpm spin. Please don't tumble dry; let them air dry instead. Laptop sleeves are hand wash only.

Your printable workday checklist

  • Main commute bag (backpack or tote)
  • Laptop sleeve, if your bag isn't padded
  • Lunch bag, packed
  • Water bottle, filled
  • Reusable cup
  • Cutlery and napkin
  • Folding shopping bag

You don't need to buy everything at once. Use what you already own, notice which single-use item turns up most often in your week, and solve that one first. If you're choosing a new bag, our 5-step checklist for buying an RPET bag will help you pick one that lasts.

Small, repeatable habits add up. A commute kit just makes them automatic.
