Extend Bag Lifespan: 7 Habits That Make Bags Last

The greenest bag is the one you keep using. Every extra year you get out of a bag you already own is a year you don't need to replace it, which is good news for your wallet and for the stuff we all throw away.

The good part is that making a bag last doesn't take much effort. It mostly comes down to a handful of small habits. Here are seven that make the biggest difference, whether you carry a folding reusable bag, a tote or a backpack.

1. Respect the weight limit

Most wear starts at the seams and handles, and overloading is the quickest way to strain them. Every bag has a sensible limit, so it's worth knowing yours. On our product pages, the Mini Reusable Bag is made to hold up to 10kg and the Medium Reusable Bag up to 20kg, roughly 2-3 grocery bags of shopping.

If a big shop is pushing past that, split it across two bags rather than cramming everything into one. Heavy items like tins and bottles go at the bottom, with the weight spread evenly.

2. Use the right bag for the job

A bag that's doing the wrong job wears out faster. A folding reusable bag is brilliant for groceries but isn't designed to carry a laptop every day. A backpack spreads heavy loads across two straps, while a tote is happiest with a lighter load. If you find you're always overloading one bag, it might be a sign you need a different shape, not a stronger version of the same one.

3. Empty it out after every use

Crumbs, receipts, leaky lids and a forgotten banana are a bag's worst enemies. Getting into the habit of tipping your bag out when you get home stops small spills turning into stains or smells, and saves the fabric from being rubbed by grit sitting in the corners. Turn it inside out now and then and give it a shake.

4. Wash gently, and only when it needs it

Washing too often, or too hot, is harder on fabric than the odd mark. Spot-clean small marks with a damp cloth first. When a proper wash is due, follow the label. Our reusable bags, totes, backpacks and lunch bags can be machine-washed at 30°C on a delicate setting, with a spin speed of 600-800 rpm. Our laptop sleeves are different: they're hand wash only.

For step-by-step tips, read how to wash a recycled bag without damaging it.

5. Air-dry, and never tumble dry

Our care labels say do not tumble dry, so skip the dryer. Hang your bag up to air-dry, away from radiators and direct heat, and reshape it while it's still damp so it dries flat and even.

6. Make sure it's fully dry before you fold it away

This is the one most people miss. Folding a damp bag into its pouch, or stuffing a wet backpack in a cupboard, is how musty smells start. Give it time to dry right through, including seams and pockets, before you fold your reusable bag back into its pouch or put it away for the week.

7. Fix small things early

A loose thread or a slightly lifting seam is easy to sort out with a needle and thread, and much harder once it's become a hole. Every so often, take a quick look at the handles, the corners and the base, which are the places that work hardest. A five-minute fix now can keep a bag going for much longer.

A bonus habit: keep it where you'll use it

A bag only lasts long enough to matter if it actually gets used. Keep a folded reusable bag in your coat pocket, handbag or car, so you're not buying another one at the till. Our folding bags tuck into an attached pouch so they're easy to carry everywhere.

The short version

  • Stay within the weight limit, and split heavy loads.
  • Pick the right bag for the job.
  • Empty it out after each use.
  • Spot-clean first; wash at 30°C on delicate when needed (sleeves are hand wash only).
  • Air-dry, never tumble dry.
  • Only fold or store it when it's completely dry.
  • Mend small issues before they grow.
