A giveback Initiative: WEA X Kind Bag

Empowering Change: Kind Bags Partners with Women's Earth Alliance in the Fight Against Plastic Pollution

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Kind Bags is teaming up with Women's Earth Alliance (WEA) to drive meaningful change in Indonesia's battle against plastic pollution. As part of this alliance, Kind Bags is hosting a giveback initiative, pledging to donate 25% of profits from all website sales of the Retro Flowers Reusable Bag to support WEA's transformative work.

Plastic Pollution: A Global Crisis

The alarming statistics on global waste generation and plastic pollution underscore the urgency of collective action. The world generates a staggering 2 billion tons of municipal solid waste annually, with at least 33% not managed in an environmentally safe manner. Plastic pollution alone claims the lives of an estimated 100 million marine animals each year. If our current trajectory persists, plastic in the oceans will outweigh fish by 2050.

WEA's Impactful Work in Indonesia

Indonesia, ranking second only to China in plastic pollution contribution, faces the dire consequences of environmental mismanagement. WEA has identified three critical challenges in women's efforts to transform Waste Management and Recycling (WMR) systems in the country:

  • Gender Disparities: Women in Indonesia face barriers to authority and respect within formalized WMR systems. Despite being active in informal waste management, they often do not receive equal opportunities, training, or compensation.
  • Household Dynamics: Asymmetrical power dynamics at home limit women's participation in WMR public committees and leadership roles. Responsibilities for childcare and household maintenance further constrain their time and energy for external work.
  • Career Development: Limited access to career development opportunities, including skill development, networks, and confidence-building experiences, impedes women's growth in WMR initiatives.

In recognition of the critical role that Indonesian women play in environmental and climate leadership and the acute support they need to grow their impact, WEA’s Accelerators in Indonesia have supported 73 women-led environmental projects from across 22 provinces in Indonesia.

Following the devastating impact of COVID-19, WEA launched the Rural Climate and Economic Resilience Accelerator Program (RuCLER) which is reviving and accelerating the growth of eco-businesses in rural areas to create more resilient and sustainable livelihoods for local communities.
