Empowering Change: Kind Bag Partners with Women's Earth Alliance in the Fight Against Plastic Pollution
Kind Bag teamed up with Women's Earth Alliance (WEA) to support women driving change in Indonesia's fight against plastic pollution. As part of this partnership, we ran a giveback initiative donating 25% of profits from website sales of the Retro Flowers Reusable Bag to support WEA's work. This campaign has now ended. Plastic pollution: a global problem
The world generates around 2 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste every year, and a large share of it isn't managed in an environmentally safe way. Plastic that escapes waste systems ends up in rivers and oceans, where it harms wildlife and ecosystems.
WEA's work in Indonesia
Indonesia is one of the countries most affected by plastic pollution. WEA has identified three key challenges women face in transforming waste management and recycling (WMR) systems there:
- Gender disparities: women are active in informal waste management but often lack equal authority, training and pay within formal WMR systems.
- Household dynamics: caring and household responsibilities limit women's time to join public committees and leadership roles.
- Career development: limited access to skills training, networks and confidence-building opportunities holds back women's growth in WMR initiatives.
Recognising the critical role Indonesian women play in environmental and climate leadership, WEA's Accelerators in Indonesia have supported 73 women-led environmental projects across 22 provinces.
Following COVID-19, WEA launched the Rural Climate and Economic Resilience Accelerator Program (RuCLER) to revive and grow eco-businesses in rural areas and build more resilient livelihoods for local communities.
